Wholesale alcohol rules in Maryland

Whether a producer may sell direct to a retailer here, by beverage class. Each row says how well sourced it is: whether we read the statute ourselves, or are still working from our own notes or a secondary summary.

This is the producer-to-retailer lane. Sales through a licensed wholesaler are the ordinary route and are not what these rows describe. Nothing here is legal advice — it is a record of what we read, published so you can check it.

Not open on DISTRYB yet. SUB-STATE CONTROL. Montgomery County is its own control jurisdiction at wholesale AND retail (NABCA lists it beside the 17 states), and a state-keyed model cannot express that — an MD retailer in Montgomery County would be told the state's rules apply when the county's do. Promoted from `notes` to a FIELD because the warning was prose: once MD's last lane is read it would otherwise show up as ready to open, warning and all.

Beer

Open, but conditional

Condition: The privilege runs from a SEPARATE Class 7 limited beer wholesaler licence the brewery must OBTAIN, not from the brewery licence itself — the Colorado mechanism, as with this state wine and spirits lanes.

Md. Alc. Bev. 2-203(b)(3)-(4) (2023 Ch. 429) — we have not recorded where to read this, or when it was last checked.

Wine

Open, but conditional

Condition: The privilege runs from a SEPARATE Class 6 limited wine wholesaler licence the winery must OBTAIN, not from the Class 4 limited winery licence itself.

  • Producer must make no more than 35,000 gal/yr to qualify
  • No more than 27,500 gal/yr may move through this lane

Md. Alc. Bev. 2-203(b)(2) and the Class 6 section (2018 Ch. 300, eff. 2018-07-01) — we have not recorded where to read this, or when it was last checked.

Spirits

Open, but conditional

Condition: The privilege runs from a SEPARATE Class 8 liquor wholesaler's licence the distillery must OBTAIN, not from the Class 9 limited distillery licence itself — the Colorado mechanism.

  • Producer must make no more than 100,000 gal/yr to qualify
  • No more than 27,500 gal/yr may move through this lane

Md. Alc. Bev. 2-203(b)(6), 2-308.1 (2023 Ch. 429, eff. 2023-07-01) — we have not recorded where to read this, or when it was last checked.

RTD / canned cocktails

Open, but conditional

Condition: The privilege runs from a SEPARATE Class 7 limited beer wholesaler licence the brewery must OBTAIN, not from the brewery licence itself — the Colorado mechanism, as with this state wine and spirits lanes.

Derived from this state's beer, wine and spirits lanes (Md. Alc. Bev. 2-203(b)(3)-(4) (2023 Ch. 429); Md. Alc. Bev. 2-203(b)(2) and the Class 6 section (2018 Ch. 300, eff. 2018-07-01); Md. Alc. Bev. 2-203(b)(6), 2-308.1 (2023 Ch. 429, eff. 2023-07-01))

A class not listed above is one nobody has read yet — not even a secondary summary. It is not a finding that Maryland forbids it. Every row above links the statute it rests on, so you can check the reading for yourself.
